Background of the Study:
Urban agriculture in Ijebu North is increasingly recognized as a vital component of food security amid rapid urban growth. With urban populations expanding, traditional food supply systems are under strain, leading to an increased reliance on locally produced agricultural goods (Ogunleye, 2023). Urban agriculture offers an innovative solution, integrating modern farming techniques within urban settings to enhance food availability, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable practices (Babatunde, 2024). However, the transition from rural to urban agriculture is fraught with challenges such as land tenure issues, environmental degradation, and policy inadequacies (Afolabi, 2025). This study critically examines the role of urban agriculture in mitigating food insecurity by analyzing production methods, distribution networks, and community engagement. It highlights how urban farming not only supplements the food supply but also empowers urban dwellers economically and socially. The research will assess the effectiveness of current urban agriculture initiatives and propose strategies to optimize their impact on food security while ensuring environmental sustainability. The study underscores the importance of aligning urban planning with agricultural development to create resilient food systems.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the potential benefits of urban agriculture, Ijebu North faces significant challenges in implementing sustainable practices that enhance food security. Inadequate land policies, limited access to modern farming technologies, and environmental constraints have hindered the full realization of urban agriculture’s potential (Afolabi, 2025). These challenges threaten the capacity of urban agriculture to effectively contribute to local food security and economic stability (Ogunleye, 2023).
